PaulFreemanandAlunArmstrongareexcellentasthetwoleads.ItisdifficultnottothinkofPaulFreemanasthevillainousFrencharchaeologistin'RaidersOfTheLostArk'-but,itiscredittohisskillsasanactorthatheisasbelievable(andmuchmorelikable)astheverydifferentLondoncabbieRay.AlunArmstrong,ofteninauthoritativeroles,isconvincingandsympatheticasJim,thesomewhatstereotypicalEnglishpublicschoolmasterwhoisyetsodesirousofbreakingawayfromthelifehehasknownafterheretires.ThankstothechancemeetingwithRay,heisabletofulfilhisambitionsto"seetheworldandfallinlove". Strongperformancesaregivenalsobythesupportingactorsandactresses.SpecialmentionshouldbemadeofRay'sfriendBilly(KarlJohnson)whoaddsatouchofblackhumourtothestory.(Triviapoint:KarlJohnsonwasoneofthemusicianson'Rainbow'initsveryearlydays). PerhapsIshouldmentionthat,althoughfairlyconservativebynature,Ididnotthinkthesceneupstairswasoffensive;rather,Ifounditinnocentandtouching.Whatevermayhavehappened,however,themostimportantaspectoftherelationshipistheirfriendship.JimandRayweretwolonelymenwhowouldhaveprobablyremainedsohadtheynotfoundeachother.Attheend,Iwasontheedgeofmyseat,willingthestorytoendthewayitdidandIwassopleasedwiththeoutcome. 'WhenI'm64'isanunconventionalbuttouchingstorywithitsthemeof'it'snevertoolate'.Allthethreadsofthestoryarebroughttogethereffectivelyandcarefullywhilstitspotentiallycontroversialscenesarehandledwithsensitivity.IfindithardnottolikeJimandRaynortowishthemthebestofluck.Itdeservestobecalledaclassic.
